24 Hours

There was blood everywhere but it wasn’t like she would have to clean it up

We have 24 hours to live.

The newsreader read the statement in a monotone voice as if he was talking about government corruption or the discovery of a body in a park.

Still, empty and soulless, his voice didn’t betray any fear. Though his eyes were wider than usual.

Abby pushed the off button on the TV with shaking fingers, gazing out of the window at the sky. The clear blue colour now reflected off the inky black screen. It didn’t look any different from usual and it certainly didn’t seem like an asteroid would hit us all in the next 24 hours.

Only 24 hours left.

The thought should fill her with fear but in reality, she hadn’t felt like she’d been living for a while. Trapped in this house, in this life she didn’t love with a man who didn’t love her.

Her whole body began to shake and she had to move around. Pacing up and down in the living room, a caged animal restless to escape.

But where could she go? The park, the supermarket? It all seemed so pointless now, her small life. She was a hamster on a wheel with nowhere else to go and no one else to see.
