How To Be Productive Without Becoming Exhausted

Many people think the only way to be productive is to get up at 5 am and work until midnight. Unfortunately, I’m a member of the insomnia club rather than the 5 am club so I’ve usually not long fallen asleep when the early risers are starting their day. Luckily for me, there are ways to be productive whilst not burning out — I’m working smarter, not harder and hopefully, you can too.

Productivity experts often claim getting up at 5 am and working until late at night is the only way to get things done. This seems to make sense on the surface, having more time to work should naturally lead to higher levels of productivity. In reality, working non-stop will only lead to burn out. It might be good in the short term but after a while of living on little sleep, your productivity levels will fall.

Personally, I went through a phase of getting up at 5 am for a workout before my daily commute to the office. It worked for a while and the bragging rights are great. Getting to smugly tell your work colleague who slept in until shock horror 8 am that you’ve been on the go since 5 am is a better boost than a morning coffee. However, that seemed to be the only benefit for me and it wears off pretty quick as I would then spend the rest of the day exhausted. The reality is I’m not much of a morning person.
