I Miss My Coffee Breaks

Outrageously freelance jobs only pay you to work

As much as I love freelancing I’m not wearing rose coloured glasses. THIS LIFE IS HARD!

Don’t be fooled that quitting your job and working for yourself is the easy option. Freelancing, despite all the positive articles (some of them my own) will never be the easiest of journeys.

With no mangers to guide you and working as both your own boss and the employee, it’s a difficult life to navigate and there are a few struggles along the way.

You Only Get Paid to Work

In my office job you were paid for the role — inclusive of coffee breaks, walks to the printer and toilet breaks.

In my new tutoring role, I get paid for my time alone. Planning and learning new processes are not included in your paid work so coffee breaks definitely aren’t.

Of course, this is fair, I’m not expecting to be paid to do nothing, however, when you also have to pay your own tax and live without any employee benefits it is a tough pill to swallow.

It almost makes me miss an office job.

Work and Pay Are Not Equal in Freelance Roles
