Turns out AI is a bigger threat to humanity than we thought. It might not only steal your job but destroy the planet too
Artificial Intelligence (AI) seems to be everywhere these days. It’s uploaded to new computers automatically (to make your life easier) and seems to be the hot topic of every new business.
Whilst many are scared it could take their jobs, automating the processes we now do ourselves, there might be an even bigger threat (even though job losses are bad enough in my opinion). AI also uses masses amounts of energy and many people do not yet know about it.
As you create a cool piece of generated art, or use ChatGPT as your personal best friend/therapist/ or exam cheat did you know it’s doubling our energy needs?
Here’s the thing, AI is basically a very cool search engine (at the moment). The uses are of course endless and will only get more complex but right now AI is drawing in data from other sources and re-using it to answer questions or create new work (like art, documents and written communications). This all takes energy. Think of an old computer whirring away when you have too many tabs open and it’s trying to load something else.
