My First Writing Job Fired Everyone Overnight
The dangers of freelancing are serious, you are only ever a day away from unemployment
Whilst completing my master’s degree, I had a part-time writing job. I wrote events and travel articles for an online magazine. I’d applied through a student recruitment site and for the first time I was being paid to write.
Life was good!
I decided to write full time whilst I job hunted for a ‘real career’ as you could dedicate as many hours as you wanted.
I loved getting paid to write about upcoming events and visit interesting places. Turns out I had found my ideal career and planned to stick with writing, instead of hunting for a 9–5.
Then overnight I lost my job.
As it turns out the magazine which was a hit in Australia wasn’t making much money in the UK. They decided to pull the plug on this part of their publication. Granted they hadn’t given it much time to take off but I guess they decided to cut their losses.
They were kind enough to let us continue writing for free but our efforts no longer deserved any payment.
This was my first realisation of the freelance world:
- You can lose your job overnight
