This Is Your Sign to Stop Doom Scrolling
Put your phone away the bad news can wait
I can’t remember where I first heard the term doom scrolling but I knew it was the perfect term to describe what I, and no doubt many others, were doing.
Doom scrolling is excessively absorbing the news on your screen. Whether you’re constantly refreshing twitter or addicted to breaking news it is a new way of consuming the media.
I first started doing this, without realising there was a name for it, during the start of the pandemic. I developed the unhealthy habit of checking on the number of deaths daily and not just reading local news but finding out what was going on around the world. If a local man in Texas had refused to wear a mask I knew about it in the UK.
I think a lot of people will relate to consuming more news than ever before in their lifetime. And not just news but the opinions of everyone else.
Part of me felt like keeping up with the news especially the deaths was a good way to honour the people who had lost their lives. With huge numbers of deaths, it is often hard to visualise, the individuals become lost as a statistic.
Eventually I broke free from this negative habit as it wasn’t making me feel good and there’s really nothing you can do. But recently I feel…
